As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. (Col. 2:6-7 KJV)
Root is an integral part of a Plant; the necessary anchor that provides stability and sustenance for it. Root is so basic and necessary (to the Plant) that it is the first and initial protrude of a seedling. It is that part that attaches the Plant to the ground to draw nutrients including water and nourishment for Plant. It is the lifeline for the Plant.
As Kingdom citizens, Paul was keen and careful about the Colossian Christians having Root. He was assured that their being rooted would build and establish the Saints in the Faith to the good abounding in the same with thanksgiving. We must pause and examine the verity of this truth to validate the texture and template of our growth in the Faith with the test control of being “built, established and …abounding therein with thanksgiving”.
The profound and reflective proof of a rooted Christian is the thanksgiving that accompanies his/her learnings in the Faith that causes growth and stability to be imminent. This is a necessary implement to foreclose any thought or recourse to the former lifestyle from which he/she has been rescued. Abounding therein with thanksgiving is the proof of root in the Faith
Psalm 1 typifies the Christian life trend with the planting of a tree and graphically illustrates the growth and resplendence of that lifestyle with the sustenance and nourishment delivered/drawn by root of a tree from the ground upon where it is planted versus the tossing, wandering and nomadic trend of the wicked (who does not know God). It says, “Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked [following their advice and example], Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit [down to rest] in the seat of [b]scoffers (ridiculers). But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And on His law [His precepts and teachings] he [habitually] meditates day and night. And he will be like a tree firmly planted [and fed] by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season; Its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers [and comes to maturity]. The wicked [those who live in disobedience to God’s law] are not so, But they are like the chaff [worthless and without substance] which the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand [unpunished] in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.” (Psalm 1:1-5 AMP).
Notice, sinners will not stand or company with the righteous because as a chaff; without root or anchor, are not established in the Faith and are therefore tossed and driven by the wind.
Beloved, let us grow downward (inward) upon the teaching and true doctrine of Faith in the Word of God, taught and interpreted by the Spirit of God who Himself inspired and motivated the writings and preservation of the Bible and thereby grow up in Him. Take Root
