“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6)
This is not merely a comforting sentiment; it is a divine challenge to human ego.
We live in an era obsessed with “might” the accumulation of financial resources, social influence, and intellectual prowess. We are trained to rely on power, the force of our own will, influence, and technological advancement. Yet, God halts our frantic striving with a singular truth: the things of eternal significance are never birthed from the sweat of human effort alone.
Zerubbabel was facing a mountain (Zech. 4:7). Perhaps today, one may be facing a mountain that feels far beyond your natural capacity. The temptation is to lean harder into your own understanding. But the message of Zechariah is a call to holy dependence. When we reach the end of our resources, we find the beginning of His (God’s).
To live “By My Spirit” is the recognition that the Holy Spirit is our true Helper and Support. He does not need your brilliance; He requires your availability. The capstone of the work is brought forth with shouts of “Grace, grace unto it!” (Zech. 4:7). The finish line is reached not through exhaustion, but through the sustaining favor of God.
As we navigate and transition to the new year, we must stop trying to muscle our way into destiny. The same Spirit that hovered over the void at creation and raised Christ from the dead is the same Spirit assigned to our life in Christ Jesus.
Let us hope and depend on God, silent the inner critic that demands you do it all. The mountain will become a plain—not because you were strong enough to climb it, but because the Spirit of the Living God moved it. Trust the oil of the Spirit to flow through our lives today and the years ahead in Jesus Name. “By My Spirit”, saith the LORD.
