But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Matt. 4:4)
There is a spiritual component to Human life. It is about this component to Human existence that bread alone cannot maintain or support rather the Word of God. The Bible provides insights into the nature of human existence, the source of true life, and the importance of God’s Word.
Jesus informs that while physical nourishment is necessary for the body, it is ultimately insufficient to sustain the whole person. The complete picture of human well-being requires spiritual nourishment derived from the unchanging, life-giving words of God. Dependence on God’s provision and guidance, demonstrates that true sustenance comes from God, not from a material source.
“Man shall not live by Bread alone…” challenges a materialistic outlook that places a higher value on physical provision and comfort than on spiritual truth. In a culture obsessed with consumption, this is a reminder that neglecting spiritual nourishment in favor of worldly pursuits leads to spiritual weakness and stunted growth.
Beloved, we need to prioritize spiritual food over physical, trusting that obedience to God’s will is more important than satisfying immediate appetites. When faced with temptation or hardship we need to turn to the Scriptures, where every word from the mouth of God provides the true and lasting sustenance needed for eternal life.
